8lb BS… preferably a good ‘un such as BERKLEY TRILENE or STREN
I would get braided line that is line that is more than one line wrapped around each other. It is stronger than monofilament and both of my dad’s fishing clubs swear by it. They go to Costa Rica every year and reel in 180 tarpon and hardly ever lose a fish after fishing all day. 10 pound test
I would use 8lb p-line. its just as strong as 12lb stren line only better.
I use ultra-light spinning gears and 2lb test lines for trout. Most people I know use 2lb or 4lb test lines with ultra-light or light spinning gears. Trout are line shy. So, use the lightest line that you’re comfortable with.
Try some berkley fireline crystal. It is thin and similar to floracarbon and realy strong.
Stren is the best brand out there for trout, some other brands can be stronger, but your looking to get some trout in. OK, your doing great so far putting new line on your poles. It seems like your getting some good size fish. So, I would go with 10 lb Stren. Its thin so its not so obvious in clear water. It is also strong enough to hold your fish. make sure that when you go that you set your drag to a reasonable setting you know, don’t make it too so loose that a fly drags it out, but don’t make it to where only a truck can pull it either. Good luck and have fun!
Your Dad and you will be fine re-spooling/re-stringing with either 6-8lb test. Generally any good brand line will do ya’ especially if they (trout) are stockers/plants. Other rersponders have givin’ brand names that will do you guys right. Good luck with the trout and am sure you’ll be nettin’ them once ya’ change that line;)… ‘ ( ((
Note: If you guys are usin’ spinning reel rigs then make sure that line doesn’t exceed more then 1/8 from edge of spool ~ anything over that will cause line problems ie., casting, occasional spinnin’ reel birdnest/tangles etc…. Link I picked at random but, it will give one the basics of proper care and re-spoolin’ line.
Added: The knot for tyin’ off line to a spool that I go with is the Arbor Knot ~ link. Site also has other important fishin’ knots (left hand column of page) and are shown in the animated format for simple tyin’ of them…
