Welcome back to our continuing series of articles on Freshwater Fishing Gear, we will cover the Spinning reel today. With this series we are hoping to take out the fright of purchasing fishing gear from the novice angler.

We will cover a wide range of fishing gear from reels, rods, lures, baits, jigs, lines, and knives. It is hoped by the end of the series your can go online and buy the right tackle and within budget.

We began our review on freshwater fishing reels with the spincast reel, the best reel for beginners and the infrequent fishermen. This review will cover the spinning reel, and will continue with the baitcast reel and lastly an article on the fly fishing reel.

Spinning reels come in numerous forms and are utilized by kids, casual hobbyist and enthusiastic sportsman alike. When it comes to fishing reels, the spinning reel is the most well-known and popular. It is chiefly used for light weight fishing and dominates in terms of performance and simplicity of use.

The spinning reel is perfect for landing just about any fish out there; whether it is racing rivers, local creeks, mountain lakes or your favorite hidden pond. You can catch small pond fish such as bluegills, catfish, trout and bass; it doesn’t matter, if you have strong enough line your spinning reel will land the fish.

The spinning reel has a very recognizable look with the large wire bale around the open-faced line spool and a line roller to help control the line as you retrieve it. The reel handle or “crank” can have either one or two knobs, both work equally well at preventing line friction as you retrieve it, with little or no snarling. This type of reel is mounted on the underside of the rod.

There are few negatives to the spinning reel. It is only limited by the thickness of your fishing line, when compared to the baitcast reel it holds less line. This means you will need to use a smaller, lighter line to guarantee you have enough line to get to the point you want. The lighter the line the smaller fish you can land. The spinning reel is also not as accurate at casting as the baitcast reel

A good example of this type of reel is the Daiwa Opus Spinning Reel. Priced at under $38 it is an affordable choice for general-duty fishing, well-equipped and geared for extra power.

The next article in our series “Freshwater Fishing Gear Beginners Guide” will feature the baitcast reel, an outstanding reel for master anglers.

There are two ways you can go about making your own baits, firstly is to start from scratch and make the base mix prior and literally take it from grass roots through to the finished product, or you can start with a ready made base mix and construct the bait from there.

Each of these methods has its advantages, the main of which is the costs involved and the final quality of the carp bait you are aiming to produce. For example adding flavorings, eggs and any additional oils are the only things required when you already have a good base mix, where a majority have the right quantity and quality of ingredients that are required. Although the more expensive of the two ways you do get a very good quality product at the end of this process.

The second method is to pull together all of the ingredients that are required to make a basic base mix for your fishing bait. There are three main ingredients to make the basic base mix, Semolina, Soya Flour and Ground Rice. It can take a while to get this right but it is worth it in the long run so a little patience goes a long way.

Now is the time to remember one of the main rules of mixing your own bait, liquids get added to liquids and powder gets added to powder. Basically this means you need to add all the powder mix together before you add any liquid to them what so ever. The best way to do it is to have two completely different mixing areas and then add them together at the end and mix in. Powders are best mixed in a plastic bag so you can see the mix has all come together properly.

When you have sorted out your base mix and have decided which way you are going to make your carp bait, then crack your eggs into a bowl and add your flavours and oils to the eggs, most manufacturers will give you guidelines on how much egg you need to make your carp bait, however a usual rule of thumb is approx 4 eggs per kilo of base mix. With the eggs cracked and the flavors added slowly whisk the mix with a fork trying to avoid getting to much air into the eggs, if you beat to much air in then the air will boil out of the bait and leave your finished product too soft.

Once you are sure that your liquids are all fully mixed you can start adding them to your base mix, a little at a time, not to much but add a little quite often and keep mixing it with a fork until the mix becomes too thick to use a fork on. At this point you have to get your hands dirty as you will need to mix by hand (wear gloves if you don’t want to smell like your bait for the next week). Continue dribbling in the mixes together until when you break the ball open you will see that it is the same dampness all the way through.

Break the paste into sections that can be placed into a bait gun, compress the sausage through the gun using the nozzle that corresponds with the size of carp bait you want, i.e 18mm nozzle for 18mm boilies. When you have the sausage roll it out with a Gardner sausage rolling table, this ensures the sausage is level and will avoid your boilies coming out oval and broken.

Once you have rolled your sausage in the rolling table and produced an amount of mix into the required size spheres you will need to move on to the next stage, boiling your carp bait. Take a small amount of your boilies and place them in a pan of boiling water for around two minutes. Refrain from putting too many in the pan at any one time as this can restrict the bait from cooking properly.

Once they have been in the pan for around two minutes you can remove them and put them on a dry tray for around 24 hours which will give them a chance to form their skin in full. At the end of this time you will be able to go and try your bait out on the fish.

Fishing has been around forever, and there are many reasons on to which why people fish. The most common reason that people fish in my opinion is for the sport of it, fishing fun and a great way to bond with friends and family. Others may make a living off of doing it such as commercial fishermen. And of course there is the angler that just loves to fish, and loves to eat fish, taking notice of the local fishing regulations though.

When it comes to fishing, there are many types of fishing that can be done. For the purpose of this article I will be covering some basic types of fishing gear that is used when fishing in either lakes or inshore saltwater, such as flats fishing.

You will need to make sure that you have a couple of rod and reel set ups. If there are only 2 people that are fishing, then it would be ideal to bring 4 rod and reel set ups on the boat with you, or as many as you can fit. There is no time to set up a new fishing rig when something happens and the fish are biting.

A lot of anglers will overlook the simplest piece of fishing tackle that could save them the big one. That is a net to scoop the fish up with. Sure you could pull the fish into the boat but it sucks when you loose a big catch because they shook there self off of the hook when they got out of the water.

One thing that every angler should have in their possession is a cast net. They come in many different sizes from a couple of feet to nearly 20 feet. Once you learn how to throw the bigger ones getting you live well full of live bait will be extremely easy.

If you are using a flats boat, then you can deeply benefit from having a trolling motor. Once you get into shallow waters your inboard or outboard motor may do nothing but hit ground and mess up the propeller, along with scaring the fish away. A trolling motor will allow you to quietly move across shallow waters without spooking any fish.

Your fishing days out will really benefit from a fishing tackle and they come in a large range of shapes and sizes. Many people use a fishing tackle in order to speed up the things you do while taking on a fishing day out.

You shouldn’t have any problems at all finding what you need because a fishing tackle is widely available. A fishing tackle is designed to make things easier so they are easy to use which is ideal for fishing.

You’ll be able to find a fishing tackle for all sorts of things but you’ll need to ensure you do your research so that you get the right things. A fishing tackle tends to make fishing days out a lot easier and this is one of the main reasons as to why they are so popular.

Cleaning your reel is important I’m afraid, if you want it to last, and to continue to perform. And nothing is worse than hooking that big one, only to have problems with your rod or reel. Not to mention it’ll last a lot longer if you clean it once in a while!

I’ll start there–how often to clean… you really only need to clean your real once, preferably twice a year. When fishing in salt water, twice would be better. And like anything else, it’s easy when you know how. First, here are the tools you’ll need:

* one clean towel

* a small screwdriver (typically it’s a Phillips head)

* one small bottle of grease. Do not use WD-40; WD-40 often leaves residue which can attract dirt. Instead, use a high quality grease meant for reels)

* a few Q-tips

* a few paper towels

Firstly, remove your reel from the fishing rod. Use some paper towels to completely wipe it down.

Next, remove the handle of the reel. The handle normally is removed in one of two ways–either by removing a screw of some sort in the handle itself, or simply by holding the reel and turning the handle backwards. This removes the handle. Once removed, set the handle onto a clean towel.

Lie the reel down so as to expose the (typically) 3 to 5 screws that hold the reel together. Remove these screws and set them beside the handle. You should now have exposed a small plate–remove it too, and set it down with the screws.

You are now looking inside the reel. First, with a Q-tip, clean visible debris and dirt that may be in the reel. Then put a couple drops of that good reel grease on each visible moving gear.

One caution here: a lot of grease is not necessarily a good thing. You can clog things with too much grease–a few drops is usually all that’s needed.

To reassemble, simply reverse the above process. Put the plate back into place and screw in the screws. Before reattaching the handle though, add some grease to it as well. Finally, re-install the handle.

I write articles about many things, and fishing is a big one for me. But to be honest, I’m not sure this particular article really belongs in the fishing category. Yet it’s my favorite fishing story to date.

What made this such a great trip was not the setting or the fish we caught or even the location; it was the company. It was, you see, the last fishing trip I may ever take with my eldest son.

I can still see his face when he caught his first perch at age five; smiling ear to ear while hiding the nervousness of what he might have to do about a very squirmy fish on his hook.

And now he is grown; a 21 year old who could be doing any number of things instead of sitting in the middle of a lake with his boring old father. But if this was in fact to be our last fishing trip together, it couldn’t have been better. We were different than at home, almost not even father and son. Just two guys fishing and enjoying the weather and the slower pace.

It seemed we could more easily talk about things we had trouble with at home. His desire to find his own place, to make movies one day, to move to a warmer year round climate. He told me of his plans to travel the world. And I gladly sat and listened to it all; no judging, no advising (okay… not much advising). Knowing how brief this would all be, I just sat and gladly listened to him.

It’s funny how fishing and time distort each other. For me time just stops out on the water. The “real” world disappears. There’s only that moment, and I wished I could freeze the moment forever.

What a cruel joke of nature that our principal job with our kids is also the toughest one: to let them go. To teach them to be self sufficient and well adjusted, and then let them fly away. My wife and I are so happy that we learned early on to stop and appreciate the “moment” as they happen. Time really does pass too quickly.

And when he caught that perch on our last day, we glanced at each other. A nod to the past perhaps, but also to what seems to be a new life chapter and our new roles within it. Oh, and I’m happy to report that he still smiles ear to ear when he catches a perch.

This may not have been our last fishing trip together. But if it was I am terribly grateful we did it. It is a new chapter in his life–in our lives–and, although bittersweet, I am so glad we pulled off this last minute trip together.

If you are a parent who is lucky enough to be fishing with your kids, I encourage you to stop and embrace every moment. Keep teaching them, but sometimes, just sit back and watch them. Although it sometimes feels that time stops out there in the middle of the lake, I’m sad to say, it doesn’t.

While some may sneer, others will smile when remembering the spring season of 2008. February through May proved to be the windiest season that anyone could remember. Though 20-30 mph winds became a dreaded norm last year, a certain breed of baitfish saved many days for a select few middle coast guides and anglers.

Summer is the season the surf rolls in, fall is the migration of shrimp, but the annual arrival of the almighty glass minnow is the highlight of springtime. Moving by the thousands, the silver and flashy prey arrive to the shallow flats. The buffet ushers in the pelicans and gulls which will feast for weeks on end. In an all-at-once attack, the speckled trout and redfish will hang near and then suddenly strike. Be patient and wait it out as it will significantly improve your chances of capitalizing on the frenzy.

Along with Captain Kent Sabin, I was guiding a group of fishermen from Dallas and Austin that spring on what turned out to be one of, if not the windiest day of the entire season. From the word go, we were experiencing a 20mph wind from the south; which then turned around on us with a 30mph wind out of the north! The wind was making every bit of fishable water available to us muddy and we were left wondering exactly what we were going to do.

We just started heading out – and myself and the good captain were hearing from other guides that we ought to just cancel the trip! Well, we weren’t about to cancel the trip and send all these fishermen back home without having ever been on the water, so we decided to just get out there and see what we could catch.

We could see pelicans diving into the shallows of a cove along the south shore; it looked like the cove was packed with baitfish! We moved close enough to cast and got ready for what promised to be some pretty heavy mud by getting on our waders. Even though the waters were murky and the tide was starting to fall, I had an instinctive feeling that the big fish would make a move soon. We decided to mimic the glass minnows with some Brown Lures glow and chartreuse soft plastic lures – they’re ideal for these situations. I added a miniature chrome topwater and before long, we were starting to attract some attention from redfish. They started off biting slow, as they always do; but then they really started to rush in!

A patch of bait that was previously the size of a swimming pool quickly became tightly confined. Minnows flipped and bounced on the surface like popcorn. Trout were seen jolting clear out of the water in pursuit. The surface of the water boiled as piranha-like predators furiously attacked glass minnows like machines.

Typically, to draw the trout above water you would reel fast and keep the lure above the surface but the most solid hookups came when we slowed down the retrieve. As a token of the outing’s success, we had full limits of redfish!

If you’re still waiting for the right time to get out on the water, stop waiting; but don’t be afraid of the dark – after dark can be the best time of all!
